American Athlete of the Month - October 2009

It’s an amazing experience for me to be honored as an American Athlete of the Month. Why? Because although I’ve been a member of the gym on and off for more than thirty years, even when I’ve been “on” in terms of membership, my commitment to my own fitness has been admittedly “off.” When I did show up, it was because I knew I should rather than because I really wanted to. A less-than-ideal motivation that made my commitment more-than-difficult to sustain. And that’s what’s changed.
Since returning once again to the gym in September, at Stacy’s urging, I joined the early morning Dancercise class taught by Beth. Now, three times a week I’m there at 7:30 a.m. – loving the experience. The music, the camaraderie, the instruction and the sweat are a winning combo. It’s fun! And that’s what I’ve needed all along…fun at the gym! Combining that with my walks with friends around Greenlake, using the Stairmaster once or twice a week while listening to Podcasts, and luxuriating in the sauna – well, I feel like a changed woman. My self-image has morphed into someone keenly bent on doing everything possible to stay healthy and fit. That’s who I’ve become – and I’m loving the “new” me.
I want to take this opportunity to express my deep gratitude to all of you at American Athlete for the welcoming environment you’ve created and for your attention to the details of what makes a gym worth going to. Thank you!
